Fatality Fire in Lakewood Apartment Complex

Lakewood, Wash. – At approximately 12:00 p.m., West Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to an apartment fire at 6116 112th Street SW in Lakewood. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from a ground floor apartment window and had reports of possibly two people inside. Crews made entry and confirmed one fatality in the apartment and there was not a second person inside. It was later determined the other possible occupant was not home at the time of the incident. The fire was contained to the room of origin and no other units were effected.

One working smoke alarm was present in the apartment and was sounding when firefighters arrived. Due to the size of the fire, an automatic sprinkler system could have extinguished it prior to firefighters’ arrival. The cause of the fire is deemed undetermined at this time, pending the findings of the Medical Examiner.
