Frequently Asked Questions

Are there application and test fees?
West Pierce Fire & Rescue (WPFR) does not charge an application fee. There is no registration cost for the entry-level online examination and WPFR will provide the official Orientation Guide (with a practice examination).

The entry-level application period has a closing date and maximum volume. When should I apply?
We are unable to predict how quickly applications will be received and encourage candidates to apply early. The application period will automatically close if the maximum is received, which may occur before the closing date.

I’m unable to attach a resume and/or documentation to my entry-level application. Where do I send documents?
Based on volume of entry-level candidates, we require completion of the online application initially. This assists with review and evaluation, as information is presented in the same format. If invited to the interview phase, we will request a resume and additional documentation. Be prepared now; ensure your resume is updated and we generally accept up to three recommendation letters.

I want to revise my application but can’t make changes in my GovernmentJobs account. Do I need to submit another application?
Please do not submit another application, this creates a duplicate record. Any changes can be sent via email to employment@westpierce.org.

I’m unable to access my GovernmentJobs account. Can you reset my password?
For GovernmentJobs technical assistance, please call 855-524-5627.

Can I schedule a ride along after submitting an application?
Based on volume of candidates, we are unable to accommodate ride along requests during the hiring process.

Do I need a current Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) to apply?
No, if you have not completed CPAT by the time job offers are made, it becomes a condition of employment. WPFR pays all costs associated with conditions (CPAT, medical exam, drug screening, psychological assessment and background investigation).

The job posting notes a background investigation includes criminal history and driving record review. Are there automatic disqualifiers for employment?
We encourage candidates to review RCW 43.43.830 for information on background checks. Employees must have the ability to legally operate a vehicle in Washington State and are required to provide proof of a current/valid driver’s license prior to start date.

What is required for veterans’ preference?
Please review the Washington State Guide for veteran definitions and preference categories. Preference is added to final, passing (minimum of 70%) score. We generally request documentation (DD214, NGB form 22 or equivalent) at the interview phase.

Can I take the entry-level online examination on a different date?
We are unable to accommodate alternative dates. The online examination is accessible for a 24-hour period on the date(s) posted.

I live out of state. What options are there if I’m selected for an interview?
Possible options may include by video (Zoom or Teams) or a conference call, we will discuss on an individual candidate basis.

I am unavailable and/or out of town during the interview dates. Are there alternative dates?
We are unable to accommodate alternative dates. Possible options may include those offered to candidates living out of state (video or conference call).

I’m having difficulty scheduling the entry-level online examination and/or oral board interview. Can I email you the date?
You must schedule from your GovernmentJobs account. For technical assistance, please call 855-524-5627.

How do I purchase a study guide for the entry-level online examination?
Upon review of your completed application, the official orientation guide and a practice test will be sent via email. There is no cost for these materials.

What kind of questions can I expect for the entry-level examination?
There are 100 questions, assessing reading ability and comprehension, mathematical reasoning, map reading, writing ability, human relations and reasoning skills. There is no material to study and memorize ahead of time, the examination will provide all content relative to the questions.

Are there additional exam preparation guides and/or tools I can buy?
WPFR provides the official orientation guide and practice test. We encourage you to take the practice test and review any questions missed. This may help you to assess question content and correct answer.

I do not have a laptop, desktop computer and/or browser required for the online exam. Do you provide a written test I can take in person?
We do not have the exam in written form. Please email employment@westpierce.org for possible options to access the required hardware/browser.

How do I request testing accommodation due to a disability?
Please email employment@westpierce.org with the accommodation needed. Please do not email health and/or medical information. We only need details specifying what the accommodation is, for example if an additional 30 minutes is needed for test time.

How soon after the exam will I have my score?
