Two People Jump from Lakewood Apartment Complex
Lakewood, Wash. – At approximately 4:00 a.m., West Pierce Fire & Rescue was called to an apartment fire at 14820 Union Avenue SW in Lakewood. Firefighters arrived to find the second floor of the Union Crest Apartments fully engulfed. Two occupants had already jumped from the building. One was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Three other occupants drove themselves to the hospital to be evaluated, and five dogs were rescued by firefighters.
All 16 units of the building were involved to some level and the Red Cross is assisting them. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Update as of June 16, 2015: An apartment manager helped to rescue occupants from the second story of the apartment, as their access to the stairway was blocked by fire. A shelter was set up at Clover Park Technical College by the Red Cross to assist those displaced from the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
