WPFR Achieves Top-Rated Protection Class 2 Rating
West Pierce Fire & Rescue has been awarded a Protection Class 2 rating by the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau (WSRB), making it one of the top-rated fire departments in the state of Washington.
Fewer than ten fire departments statewide have earned a Protection Class rating of 2 or better (with Seattle Fire Department holding the sole Protection Class 1 rating). West Pierce Fire & Rescue is the only department in Pierce County with a Protection Class 2 rating.
The WSRB is an independent, non-profit service organization that rates fire departments on their ability to respond to fires and protect their communities.
The Protection Class rating reflects the WSRB’s evaluation in four major areas:
- Fire Department: Fire stations, apparatus, equipment, personnel, and training
- Fire Safety Control: Code enforcement and community fire safety education
- Water Supply: Capacity, distribution, and maintenance of hydrants and water systems
- Emergency Communications: Emergency dispatch communications systems
Departments are re-evaluated every five years. In 2020, WPFR was given a Protection Class rating of 3.
The new Protection Class rating is a reflection not only of the hard work and commitment of West Pierce Fire & Rescue, but also of the incredible support from our community. Together, we will continue to raise the bar and keep our community safe and strong.
